In none of the examples do I rest my pick on the strings, however when the distortion fizzles to a stop I do damp the strings and then pluck again. Any time you hear me strike the string loudly I rest my palm at the bridge rather than letting ring out for the next minute. As for the sustain, as I mentioned I'm demonstrating this issue on palm muted notes mostly because that's where it is a serious issue for my ears.

There's nothing irregular about my guitars and their setups, nor is there anything glaringly wrong with my technique (other than sucking). Got some pic's of your pickup height and neck action.

If you have the pickups maxed at sting/s, the magnetic pull is going to effect sustain (which I've noticed you have none) plus if close enough can pull the string out of pitch as it returns to settle. How high do you have your pickups set? Everything I hear, goes up in pitch with the fade. It all sounds hideous to me, I cannot figure out how to get rid of that disgusting noise no matter how hard or soft I play. The open notes (as in not palm muted) are not so affected since their high frequencies are allowed to sing.įor Jaws I used a Boden 8 with Lace Aluma XBars (I think), and the other clips are an Ibanez Talman with single coils in position 4 I can turn the treble and mid all the way down along with the guitar tone knob and I'll still hear it (albeit somewhat muffled). To my ears every single palm muted note has a high frequency squishing noise and it sounds disgusting. Please excuse the inaccuracies, I'm a little rusty. Play some chords or a riff and post them.Okie dokie, here are some palm mutes in context. That fretting out sound, is like you're using your thumb for a pick and stalling/resting it on the A string, letting the E string hit your thumb nail, or its your next attack that your thumb is muting at the start of the attack, making that buzz. I agree with John, plus it sounds like you're half palm muting and the guitar isn't setup.

I also included a random noise clip of a buzzy sound that my amp sometimes picks up. It will happen around the last half of the note if I let the note ring out, when it is quieter. Also I'm demonstrating palm muted as that's when it is most noticeable and most annoying me. As i mentioned about the fella on the other forum, I believe he may be right. The buzzing sweep noise occurs even when I play just loud enough for the distortion to kick in. I struck the string in many different dynamics so you can get an idea of how loud I am playing. I've included a few examples here for you using thumb and pick. Let me know what you think after working with it seriously for a couple or three weeks. And there must be something there to begin with or you just get a plain distortion. Think of it as similar to a microscope.ĭistortion will have an influence but it's unpredictable - depending on various factors it can be just as likely to disguise/cover up an effect as exaggerate it.

You don't really notice it as much on acoustic unless you're using a pickup on the guitar the pickup brings it out, probably because it focuses the point of pickup on one small section of the string - Since the harmonic signature is simplified it allows changes to stand out. I've produced a similar, but slightly different effect on acoustic guitar. I'll grant that distortion may and probably does have a role to play in it, but it's secondary, not primary. As I said, I've produced the exact same sound myself. I believe this may the the correct answer and that for whatever reason my ears (or brain) disagree with this noise. Someone on another forum has suggested the perceived sweeping noise is due to the changing in harmonics relative to the fundamental as a result of the distortion clipping.
